Policing During Corona

In the frightening era of Coronavirus, the NYPD are on the front lines helping fight this battle. My friend Lt. Edwin Raymond polices in Brooklyn and says he normally encounters 3 dead bodies a week but nowadays he’s seeing 9 or 10 dead bodies a week. The police have a critical role in this moment—should they continue making arrests for small, non-violent incidents when that means people go to jail where they are hypervulnerable to Coronavirus? Should they arrest people for not practicing social distancing when that means they become hypervulnerable to Coronavirus? Should the police be scared that they could be spreading the virus? I talk about all of that and more with Lt. Raymond who’s long been fighting from within the force to make policing safer and more equitable. He’s been critical to helping decrease the use of quotas—for more on his movement to help reform the department, check out the amazing documentary Crime + Punishment. Who Killed Malcolm X

Who Killed Malcolm X is a hot new Netflix doc that tells us who pulled the trigger of the sawed-off shotgun that killed Malcolm X, which Newark mosque he was from, how he got away, how the NYPD knew Malcolm’s life was in danger and allowed him to operate, and how the FBI sowed the seeds of angry division in the Nation of Islam that led to Malcolm’s murder. I talk with the directors Rachel Dretzin and Phil Bertelsen about making the film and how the American government conspired to kill Malcolm—his top bodyguard at the end was an NYPD infiltrator and informant. A person who didn’t help identify Malcolm’s killer—a man who lived out his life in peace in Newark. A person who went on to infiltrate the Black Panthers. I can’t. Amy Sherald painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama that’s hanging in the National Portrait Gallery but there’s an awesome story around how she got that commission and the artistic decisions she made in making that painting. We get into all of that but there’s also so much more to her life than that painting. Amy had already become a major portraitist before that commission, even though, just a few years before she met the Obamas, Amy was broke and wondering where her artistic career was going. She’s also got someone else’s heart inside of her thanks to a transplant that saved her life. She’s also a former rapper. And an all-around wonderful person. Harriet Tubman Came To Slay

Harriet Tubman is one of the inspiring figures in American history. For years she did the hard, dangerous, crucial work of running into the South and grabbing enslaved people off of plantations and bringing them to freedom through the Underground Railroad to the North—sometimes taking them as far as Canada. She risked her life and changed the lives of many, many families by rescuing people from slavery. In the recent movie about her, Harriet, I felt like crying during the montage where she walks in over and over with groups of people she’s saved. But if you think you know Tubman’s story because you’ve heard it, or because you saw the movie, just know that there’s much more to tell. Most accounts do not go into her later years, when she was a Union spy and when she led Union soldiers into a raid on a Confederate plantation where she ended up freeing over 700 people in one night. After seeing the film I wanted to hear the full story of Tubman’s life as we know it so I called the author of a great new book about Tubman called She Came To Slay by Rutgers University history professor Erica Armstrong Dunbar and she gave me much deeper insight on the real Tubman’s life including how she made it from the North to the South and back, what her life was like, what her friendship with Frederick Douglass was like, what her marriages were like, why we never see Tubman smile in photos, and more. Let me know what you think. Nikole Hannah Jones - I Live In A Slaveocracy

Nikole Hannah Jones is the creator of the amazing 1619 project for The NY Times which has made people smarter, made people cry and made some conservatives lose their minds. It seeks to explain how America is still impacted by the legacy of slavery. It is not past, we are, today, in a slaveocracy. The 1619 project is a podcast, an ongoing series of articles and essays that are being taught in schools, and will soon be a series of books. This builds on Nikole’s extraordinary work for the Times and her amazing pieces on school segregation for This American Life called The Problem We All Live With. She is a verified genius, the recipient of a MacArthur grant, and I could feel her genius as I spoke to her. She is a person who is toweringly influential in that her ideas have changed my thinking on many issues and, with the 1619 project, aims to shape the way many people see the relationship between America and slavery. It was an honor to have Nikole Hannah Jones @nhannahjones come to the studio and talk about her ideas and her work. I hope you get a lot out of this. I Am Black In the Trump Era

I Am Black In the Trump Era Politicon is an annual multi-day political festival that now takes place in Nashville. I conceived and moderated a panel where I wanted to get some of my smartest Black friends onstage to talk about how they feel about being Black in the Trump era. I feel under siege, I feel rejected, and I feel like the country is in an era that’s painful and frightening to me and people who like me. I feel like the MAGA hat is the new Klan hood and it scares me to see it worn so brazenly and thoughtlessly. I wondered how others were feeling about being Black in the era of Trump. We had six awesome panelists—April Ryan the White House reporter, Malcolm Nance the superspy who just published the Plot To Betray America, Elie Mystal the legal analyst, Lexi McCammond the Axios reporter, Maya Wiley the activist and legal analyst, and Briahna Joy Gray the national press secretary for Bernie Sanders. Susan Rice - I - m A Survivor

Ambassador Susan Rice was President Obama’s National Security Advisor for four years. She was the first one from the administration to go on TV and talk about the Benghazi attacks and the Republicans made her pay for that with an unending series of attacks that cost her a chance to become Secretary of State and ended up making her 9 year old daughter have frightening hallucinations. The Republicans’ attack on Rice was political, and personal, and had nothing to do with the actual tragedy that took place in Benghazi. Rice talks about all of this and more in her new memoir Tough Love and on this show. Let me know what you think! Instagram @toureshow. She’s working on Black Lives Matter, she’s working on her family, and she’s now publishing a memoir that’s powerful, painful, beautiful, and heart-wrenching: When They Call You A Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. It’s a great, great book that tells the story of her rise and the rise of Black Lives Matter. Cullors is a really special person and I’m glad to call her a friend and see what I can learn from her. Toure Show is a place where successful people talk about their journeys. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? What can you learn from them that’ll help you on your rise? My hope is that these conversations are valuable for you. That you’ll hear something that’ll help you boost your life. Poker Pro David Williams - How To Make It In Poker

A poker star who’s won over $9 million at the table is definitely someone we all can learn from. The high pressure world of elite poker is stressful, thrilling, and complex but the trait Williams says is most important to being successful has nothing to do with the cards. Dr - Meika - How To Make It In Medicine

My sister the ER Doc deals with immense pressure in a calm way.  The hospital is chaotic but she can handle it even when it smells like charred human flesh. And climbing the corporate ladder can be like battling your way through a jungle. But she can handle that, too. They called her bossy but she did some work on herself and made changes and now she’s the Chief Medical Officer of the Hoboken University Hospital. I’m so proud of her. I had to talk to her for the show. Toure Show is successful people talking about their success. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? Puffy - How To Make A Billion

Toure Show is successful people talking about their success. What are the tactics, attitudes, and strategies that fueled their success? How’d they deal with failure? What can you learn from their journey that’ll help fuel your rise? I want these conversations to be valuable for you. Puff (or Sean Combs, or Diddy, or Brother Love) is one of the greatest business minds in the country today. He’s closing in on being a billionaire thanks to his many revenue streams—#1 Ciroc, #2 Sean John. He’s done it by being fearless in business, by being a creative visionary, by being a great marketer who understands how to infuse his brand into anything. Puff is indefatigable. He’s driven like no one you’ve ever seen. He’s great at inspiring people and setting a high bar for everyone around him. And he’s done it by using himself as billboard for his brand. He’s a star because it helps him sell. Yeah he’s got a huge ego but he uses his stardom strategically, to help himself sell so when the guy you saw dancing and rhyming alongside Biggie Smalls is now looking dapper and holding Ciroc, the vodka looks better. When he takes the audaciousness that he brought to the music biz and injects into the fashion biz, his clothes sell more. Being an icon helps him in business. And that’s just part of why he’s so successful. Nikki Giovanni - How To Make It In Poetry

Toure Show is successful people talking about the talents, tactics, and attitudes that helped them become successful. What’s at the core of your success? What’s your superpower? How did you rebound from failure? Hopefully these are conversations that are valuable to you and help you get more fuel for your journey. Nikki Giovanni is one of the greatest living poets in the world. I grew up hearing Ego Tripping recited over and over in ways that seemed to magically transform all who recited it and all who heard it. And so many of her other poems are so simple or so beautiful or so powerful that I can’t forget them. Plus Nikki is a joy to be around. She’s funny, smart, humble, and she’s cool. She’s the best dinner guest imaginable. In this hour plus conversation we talk about: • Her insight into Trump voters after a life lived in Appalachia. • The impact of watching domestic violence in her childhood home. • How she rebounded from a health scare by getting onstage. • What makes a great poem. • How she learned to cry. • Why she feels she needs to go into outer space. If you want to talk to me about this ep or suggest a future guest I’m on Twitter @Toure and on Instagram @Toureshow. And please rate and review on iTunes—it makes a difference!
